Entry Version: This is the English version of this article translated by Patrick Hogan. The original Italian version was written by Emanuele Dettori and first published on 10/05/2016. Here is the Italian version of this entry. Grammarian: Name: Silenus | Σιληνός Place of Origin: ? Date: 3rd/2nd c. BCE ↓ To Source List Biography: It is commonly asserted that Silenus mentions (Ath . 11, 482f) Nicander1 and that hence his date would be tied to Nicander’s or to the Nicanders’, which is, however, uncertain: a) the second half of the 3rd c. BCE-beginning of the 2nd c. BCE, b) the last third of the 2nd c. BCE (see the methodical illustration in Massimilla 2000, as well as Jacques 2007, pp. 99-121). As a result, there are several possible dates for Silenus: still in the 3rd c. BCE (Cohn 1913, p. 682), or in the 2nd BCE (or not before the 2nd c. BCE: Müller 1849, p. 100; Susemihl 1891-1892, 2, p. 186; Latte 1925, p. 169; Simon 2001, 554; Matthaios 2005, p. 56). Only the high dating justifies identifying him with Silenus of Calacte2Notes^ back to text1. LGGA | Perseus | BNP | BNJ^…
