He was born in Tafsirga, a town one hundred miles distant from Kayes, son of a well know local scholar and teacher, with whom he studied the principal Islamic sciences. Later he studied with Muḥammad al-Bashīr Dramé (q.v.) in Mārīna; then he travelled to Bamako and studied with Sālim Sūkhūnā, and later to Nioro where he studied for four years with Muḥammad Ṣādiq.
