Mukhtār was born at al-Zalaṭa in northern Kordofan; he read the Mukhtaṣar of Khalīl and the Risāla of Ibn Abī Zayd with his father (K. al-ṭabaqāt, 130). He was killed together with many of his pupils by the Musabbaʿāt ruler, Janqal w. Baḥr. His commentary on al-Akhḍarī waswidely read.
