Punjabi-born Sikhs began arriving in North America in significant numbers at the turn of the 20th century (Mann, 2000, 260). This migration was followed in the late 1960s by the conversion to Sikhism of American youths of non-Punjabi heritage. Many were inspired by Harbhajan Singh Puri, a Punjabi Sikh who taught yoga, and hence later came to be known as Yogi Bhajan.
