The work, written in Syria under Zengid rule in 1163 (ed. Choukri and Abouri, p. 96), is dedicated to Ibn Ẓafar’s patron, Ṣafī l-Dīn, ‘a generous raʾīs (chief)’, who might have been a notable figure in the court of Nūr al-Dīn Maḥmūd ibn Zengī (r. 1146-74).
