Antonio Monserrate was born at Vic in Catalonia, Spain, in 1536. He entered the Society of Jesus in Barcelona on 10 January 1556 and was ordained priest in 1561. Soon afterwards, he was appointed prefect of studies at the Jesuit house in Lisbon.
