Caspar Ursinus Velius was born Caspar Bernhardi in Schweidnitz, Silesia, in 1493. He enrolled at the University of Cracow in 1505, where he must have mastered humanist Latin perfectly, as he excelled among his fellow students, with his poems (Epistolarum et epigrammatum liber, Vienna, 1517; Poematum libri quinque, Basel, 1522).
