Ferenc Zay was a high-ranking military officer and a diplomat of King Ferdinand I Habsburg (r. 1526-64) as well as a memoir-writer and historiographer. He originated from near Valkóvár/Vukovar, in present-day Croatia and attended the University of Padua.
