Although Fernão Lopes de Castanheda gives the main outline of his life, his biography remains surrounded by some mystery. Born in or near 1512, he spent his early years in Santarém, where he studied at the Dominican Convent. Then, on 18 April 1528, he sailed with his father for Goa in the fleet of the new governor, Nuno da Cunha. He was to remain there for ten years.
