Francisco de Monclaro was born in Benavente, Portugal, in 1531, and became a member of the newly-founded Society of Jesus in 1554. He took part in the expedition led by Francisco Barreto, Portuguese governor of Mozambique, to Monomotapa in 1569 in retaliation for the killing of a Jesuit missionary.
