Jean Bodin was born in Angers in 1529 or 1530 into a middle-class family. He received his first education at the local Carmelite house, then at the mother-house in Paris, where he may have been tried for heresy around 1547 (on young Bodin’s penchant for Calvinism see Droz, ‘Le Carme Jean Bodin'; but cf.
