John Davis, the eldest son of a squire, was born around 1550 in the village of Sandridge, Devon, near the south coast of England. He obviously had a close association with the sea from his infancy, and he went to sea as a boy, learning his trade and doing coastal surveying from a very young age.

Once he had risen to command his own vessels, Davis initially focussed his seafaring efforts on searching out the Northwest Passage…
