Born into a family of high distinction, Justus Heurnius studied at Leiden University from 1602. He took his doctor’s degree in medicine on 18 April 1611, and afterwards travelled through England and France. After theological study in Groningen between 1615 and 1620, he served as a pastor at Kalslagen (north Holland) until November 1623.
