Oldřich Prefát z Vlkanova was born in 1523. His father made his fortune as a cloth merchant, enabling the young Prefát to study at various places of learning throughout Europe, including Wittenberg, Prague, Ingolstadt, Nuremburg and Leipzig. He later worked in a pharmacy and a mechanical workshop in Rome, and in 1546 he made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Tobolka et al., Knihopis, vol. 7, p. 308). In 1550, he travelled to Santiago…
