Commentary

Discovered in regular excavations (Dion and Daviau 2000) and hence of doubtless authenticity, the date, the linguistic identification, and the interpretation of this text have nevertheless all been matters of debate in the scholarly literature. The text consists of two lines inscribed vertically on an incense altar of complex form that stands nearly a meter high.
