Commentary

This pair of stone slabs (“orthostats”) formed the inscribed door-jambs of the building, the dedication of which they describe. This was erected by Katuwa, the last of a four-generation line of “Country Lords,” the House of Suhi (I), who seem to have dominated Karkamiš throughout the 10th century bce. Katuwa was the most active builder in the area of the city so far revealed by excavation.
