Nyai Khoiriyah (1906–83) was the daughter of Kiai Hasyim Asy’ary (d. 1947), the founder of the well-known Pesantren Tebuireng in Jombang (East Java) and co-founder of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) organisation, in 1923. As the daughter of a prominent Muslim scholar, Khoiriyah was privileged to receive a private education in the Islamic sciences from her father. In 1918, she married Maksum Ali (d. 1933), from the family of Pesantren Maskunambang Gresik (in East Java).
