The idea of An Historical Atlas of Islam was first suggested in 1958 by the late Donald Edgar Pitcher. He had completed a thesis at the School of Oriental and African Studies in the University of London on the Historical Geography of the Ottoman Empire — a work which was published posthumously in 1968 — and this larger enterprise followed naturally. In 1959 it was agreed that the new Atlas should be prepared under the aegis of the Encyclopaedia of Islam.
