[250c] When ‘Umar ibn-al-Khaṭṭâb was proclaimed caliph, he directed abu-‘Ubaid ibn-Mas‘ûd ibn-‘Amr ibn-‘Umair ibn-‘Auf ibn-‘Uḳdah ibn-Ghiyarah ibn-‘Auf ibn-Thaḳîf (who is identical with abu-l-Mukhtâr ibn-abi-‘Ubaid) to al-‘Irâḳ with 1,000 men.
