(Jul 15, 1808, Totteridge, England – Jan 14, 1892, London), Roman Catholic cardinal and second archbishop of Westminster. Manning was born an Anglican, and after studying at Oxford he entered upon a clerical career in the Church of England and soon became rector of Lavington and archdeacon of Chichester. Strongly affected by the Oxford Movement, he converted to Roman Catholicism in 1851 and became priest and provost of the Metropolitan Chapter of Westminster. In 1865 he succeeded Cardinal N.
